March Update

Well. I got sick in February. Not covid, not the flu, not strep— tested negative for all of them— just a plain old miserable cold that would not go away! The sort of cold where I wished I either felt better, so I could work more easily, or worse, so I didn't feel so guilty about not working.
That said, I did my best and right now there are only 7 PAGES remaining to be inked— with almost all the figures (and a good amount of the backgrounds) on those pages already finished. As I said in the last update, I didn't think I'd finish inks in February, but expected I would in March, and I still feel very confident about that. (Makes me wonder what would have happened if I hadn't got sick…)
Even when I didn't feel up to tackling pages, I did manage to ink a small handful of Sketches, just so I felt I was accomplishing something…
Next time around the book should be inked, and off being lettered and colored. We are getting frighteningly close to being done…

February Update

Okay! Since we last spoke, I finished the 6-page EPILOGUE, and am now inking the final section of the book, which happens to be CHAPTER 1. I lost a little work time in January due to some dental surgery, but not a lot.
CHAPTER 1 is 17 pages long, with 7 of those pages being unusually labor-intensive as they take place in a long-ago-demolished (but very cool looking!) terminal at Laguardia Airport. So you've got our main characters, crowds, and an Art Deco setting Tom worked very hard to draw correctly.
I'm focusing on this scene first, since the rest of the chapter is a lot of fun action stuff, but it does take longer than usual for me to ink. I have 2 pages completed, and 3 more nearly finished. That leaves 2 pages in this scene that I still need to start.
I probably will not finish inking CHAPTER 1 in February, but right now it does look like inks will be done in March. At which point I'll switch my focus to getting everything colored and lettered, and getting the book assembled for printing.

Happy New Year, All!
I think we all want it to be better than 2025…
…And I'm doing my best to make that be true for SECTION ZERO 1959. Since we last got together, I have finished inks on Part 4, and inked all of the Sarina Solo Story. That's pretty good, considering the kids have been home 3 of the past 6 weeks, and there was a little something called Christmas thrown in there to make things even more chaotic.
I love working on every page of this book, but was particularly happy with how the Sarina Solo Story came out. For example:
I love this panel!
Doing a story set in WWII with some Nazis and biplanes (yes: biplanes, even though it's the 1940s!) was a nice change of pace for both Tom and myself, and the results are some of our best work together (if you ask me). If the previous Solo Stories where kind of like pre-hero Marvel monster stories, this one would be right at home in DC's classic WEIRD WAR STORIES comic!
Next up: I'll finish the inks on the 6-page Epilogue, then move onto wrapping Chapter 1— at which point the inks will be done. Then I'll be able to get everything lettered and colored while Tom and I focus on the remaining Sketches.
Until next month…

December Update

I'm back on SECTION ZERO 1959 full time!
As you can see, I finished inking this double-page spread back on November 17th, and have continued working on the book since. I only have 5 pages to finish in Chapter 4's main story— all of which have been started, and most of which are already nearly complete. My goal is to finish those pages this week.
After that, I have an 8-page solo Sarina story to start inking— set in WWII during her time flying with Russia's "Night Witches" bomber squadron; I'm really looking forward to working on it— then wrap up inks on the 6-page epilogue (all pages in various stages of completion), and finish off Chapter 1, which has the most work still to be done.
I can't say how long all this will take me, but I will take on no other work until SECTION ZERO 1959 is done. And, yes, I've said that before— but that time I had another book 3/4 done sitting on the shelf, and this time I don't.
I will be better with updates, because you deserve better. This last month I kept thinking "Well, I could send out an update today— but I could have another page or two done by tomorrow, so maybe I should wait." Which was probably the wrong call. I've made a lot of them on this project, and will try to change that.
There's still coloring and lettering ahead, plus all the outstanding sketches. But right now I'm focused on finishing the inks before I get side-tracked with other duties.
Until next month…

October Update

Sorry for the long radio silence. Again. But this last summer kicked my ass. Our soccer-active daughter had both a wrist and foot injury, so couldn't do any athletics at its start, was bored out of her mind, and needed more entertaining and attention than usual. As that resolved itself, some family matters needed to be dealt with. All of which meant my wife and I both got a lot less work done than we wanted to, and really needed to.
Only now do I feel like I've got my footing back under me.
I've been picking away at SECTION ZERO 1959, but have not made major progress in the last few months.
As you know, I recently ran another Kickstarter— one which had the majority of work already done (I wouldn't have launched it otherwise) and which I felt was necessary to run in case the economy imploded— a fear I have not ruled out yet as I continue to see other Kickstarters' funding decline (or not meet expectations). As I watch other small business try to weather these very turbulent financial waters— hoping they calm before their boats take on too much water— I still feel it was the right call to make.
Most of the work on that project will be done in a few weeks, at which point I will be back on SZ59 24/7. Any other project I'd like to do hasn't even been started, and won't be until I wrap this book.
As always, I appreciate your patience. And I know it has been spread incredibly thin on this project. All I can do is make the best damn comic I can for you in return.
